‘Amergin’ is a video poem collaboration with poet, and my brother, Dylan Brennan. The work transposes the mythological first poet of Ireland to the semi-desert settings of northeastern Mexico. Loosely inspired by the fascinating story of Irish soldiers in 19th Mexico, Amergin weaves together lyrics, images, flora and fauna of the poet’s two countries (Ireland and Mexico) to create a hallucinogenic sense of estrangement and cross-pollination.
In creating the video, I gathered a lot of material: plants, sketches, votive amulets, found objects, Polaroids, etc. Some find their place in the video, others work as supporting material. For Culture Night 2026, I have arranged all of this material on a wall near where the video is being screened. Big thanks to curator and fellow Vault member Sally O’Dowd, whose work also features in the show, and Marta Dyczkowska, another good friend and fellow Vault studio member.
